It was an early session of Parliament, and the Duke of Countryholm was in town, for he always attended zealously to such, prospect of duties as still pertains to the Upper House. Miss Jane D'Aguilar, being a necessary portion of his establishment, was there also : and he was not a man to relegate his little daughter, Lady Mary, to the charge of servants in the country— besides, he liked to have her with him—so she was in town, too. Gainsborough House, iu Park Lane, was always a notable place : Iol. i. if but the duke, who was now in the strongest opposition to ministers, was unusually magnificent in his display. Receptions of the most striking character followed one another with unaccustomed rapidity : dinners, social, political, and quasi-official, were given with increasing success : and it was on all hands recognized that the Duke of Countryholm was the man to follow: not because he inspired any one with intense admiration of his intellect, but because his family power was immense, the prestige of his name was great, his reputation for common sense not inconsiderable, and, above all things, he was " so sound in his views," " such a safe man" upon all mportant questions. Now London was all very well for the duke, under these circumstances, and for Miss D'Aguilar, who, of course, did the honours of the house, but it was somewhatslow for poor little Mary, who was deprived of her companion, Jenny D'Aguilar, that young lady remaining at home with her mother: arid of this the duke was very soon aware. It troubled him no little, for though pompous and almost ponderous in his thoughts on men and politics, for his little daughter he was all simplicity and almost childish sympathy. Nowit ...
