M. le Comte de Villele, a minister the most talented, and best suited to the political exigences of the state of any since the days of Richlieu, had ineffectually opposed to the revolutionary hydra, the resources of his lofty genius and profound penetration. He was compelled to yield to the imposing majority of afaction which had carried all by force -- the Press, the Chambers, the Tribunals and the Public Offices: and which was every day gaining more ascendancy by the basest intrigues, and most revolting calumnies against the court. In vain had the King sacrificed his preroga- tivef to the opposition of the liberal party, by the ordinances of September, 1828, and yielded the Minister Martignac to the exigences...
